To expand the existing high care accommodation including additional 32 high care and 32 dementia care beds.
Uniting Care Ageing acquired adjoining ACT Government land for expansion however it included a steep fall and the challenge was to deliver an additional 64 beds in a practical integrated way.
SQC ARCHITECTURE’S SOLUTION
A two storey addition was proposed offering an enclosed bridge from the upper level to the existing facility. The lower storey was then developed as new secure dementia accommodation including a large enclosed courtyard featuring dementia specific gardens for daylight and solar gain.
The building design included 64 Resident Bedrooms all with ensuite’s, four Lounge Room, Dining and Kitchen facilities, visitors rooms, staff Wing, new kitchen and new commercial laundry.
The extension doubled occupancy numbers across the facility with no increase in electrical power capacity supplied to the enlarged site. This was made possible by the use of well insulated high thermal mass construction as well as the replacement of traditional electrical heating with gas fired hydronic heating. Other energy efficiency initiatives included a range of water-saving measures and environmentally conscious selections.
